Japanese Visa Information

Japan allows most country’s nationals access within its borders for the purpose of a short-term trip. The only information you must provide is your passport and your return ticket voucher.

A short-term trip is define by the Japanese embassy as “such purposes as sightseeing; recreation; visits to relatives, friends, or acquaintances; amateur participation in athletic meetings or other contests; business trips (such as market surveys, business liaison, business talks, signing contracts, and after-sale service for machinery imported into Japan); attending lectures, conferences, etc.; academic surveys or research presentations; religious pilgrimages or visits; or other similar activities during a short period of stay in Japan.”

The only reasons for a visa requirement are visits to reside in Japan, to obtain employment or to otherwise engage in remunerative activities.

There is a new non-citizen procedure effective in Japan since November 2007.  All foreign visitors traveling to Japan must be fingerprinted and photographed at the landing examination point of entry to avoid terrorism in advance.  Don't be afraid, this quick and easy process takes less than a minute.  It sounds much more scary than it is.
