It is divided into 8 prefectures or departments : Fukuoka, Kagoshima, Kugamoto, Miyazaki, Nagasaki, Oita, Saga on the island it-self plus the archipel of Okinawa prefecture.  

The main city of the island is Fukuoka (1,4 million inhabitants). It s a big business center and one of the five stock exchange in Japan.

Hakata, Kitakyushu and Omuta are important industrial centers.

Nagasaki is the biggest and one of the oldest international port of Japan, the only gate between the outside world and japan during the Edo Period (mid 16th to mid 18th).
